Advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade its viewers, readers or listeners to take some action. It usually includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume that particular brand. Modern advertising developed with the rise of mass production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Commercial advertisers often seek to generate increased consumption of their products or services through branding, which involves the repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate related qualities with the brand in the minds of consumers. Different types of media can be used to deliver these messages, including traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, television, radio, outdoor or direct mail. Advertising may be placed by an advertising agency on behalf of a company or other organization.

Organizations that spend money on advertising promoting items other than a consumer product or service include political parties, interest groups, religious organizations and governmental agencies. Nonprofit organizations may rely on free modes of persuasion, such as a public service announcement.

Money spent on advertising has declined in recent years. In 2007, spending on advertising was estimated at more than $150 billion in the United States and $385 billion worldwide, and the latter to exceed $450 billion by 2010.

How can I set up relationship with advertising agencies?
Q. Hi. I work as an account executive for a minority daily newspaper in the US. Unlike other A/E in mainstream media, I can very less money. I want to set up relationships with big advertising agencies to expand my network, and eventually draw ads into my newspaper. I tried so many advertising agencies, but all I had are voice mails and no responses except the front desk receptionist. My question is how can I reach those people in advertising agencies? Any advice is welcomed. Thank you very much.

A. I think there are at least two avenues for you to consider. An advertising agency or a marketing communications firm might be interested in your newspaper for two reasons: 1. The Media Director of the agency might be interested in reaching what, from your description, sounds like a very tight and well-defined demographic audience. In order to interest a media director, however, you will have to be able to provide detailed information about your newspaper. This would include the following: circulation - how many readers do you have? demographics - what is the actual demographic makeup of your readership? What is their ethnic makeup? How old are they? What kind of incomes do they have? Do they work in white collar jobs or blue collar… [cont.]

How much does advertising cost on average for a real estate agent?
Q. Whats the average cost for advertising a house so that it can be sold on the market?
Asked by mountain1 - Mon Feb 15 06:06:05 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no answer to your question. Some houses remain unsold for much longer periods than do others, and thus cost far more in repetitive advertising to procure buyers. Quality advertising, however, is expensive. Many agents maintain websites on which to display listings to potential buyers, and agencies themselves mostly have similar websites for all properties listed. As well, there is newspaper and real estate guide advertising, some TV advertising on 'local homes for sale' channels, plus the costs of MLS and www.realtor.com exposure. It all adds up.

How could internet advertising be made better?
Q. I know that nobody LIKES advertising. I agree that the advertising out there sucks and is annoying. So... That's my question. Assuming that we aren't going to pay for all the web sites we use, how could online advertising be changed to be a better experience for users AND more valuable for advertisers so they want to buy it?
Asked by Pixel - Tue Oct 21 12:00:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The buyers online use phrases called keywords to search for an item. Thus the advertising that works for both the consumer and the advertiser is the one based on a good keyword research. In addition, the ads have to portray the product in an unbiased and interesting way. A misrepresentation will neither help the advertiser nor the consumer, because it will be exposed sooner or later. An honest ad will bring repeated sales. More on this subject can be found in the following website:

Advertising is paid communication through a non-personal medium in which the sponsor is identified and the message is controlled.
