Textiles Encyclopedia Article

A textile is a flexible material comprised of a network of natural or artificial fibres often referred to as thread or yarn. Yarn is produced by spinning raw wool fibres, linen, cotton, or other material on a spinning wheel to produce long strands known as yarn. Textiles are formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, or pressing fibres together (felt).

The words fabric and cloth are used in textile assembly trades (such as tailoring and dressmaking) as synonyms for textile. However, there are subtle differences in these terms. Textile refers to any material made of interlacing fibres. Fabric refers to any material made through weaving, knitting, crocheting, or bonding. Cloth refers to a finished piece of fabric that can be used for a purpose such as covering a bed.

Textiles Questions & Answers

If I have two twin mattress on top of each other on my bed, what size of bed textiles should I buy? Queen?
Q. In my bed I have two twin mattresses piled on top of each other. The actual bed covers im using are twin bed covers, but they are way to small to cover both matresses form the sides (the bottom matress shows). Im going to buy new bed textiles for christmas so I wanted to know what size (queen?) should i get so that both mattresses can be covered.

A. Two mattresses are not the same thing as a mattress and a box spring. I hope you have a board below the mattresses or better yet a box spring or you will be in for trouble. The springs need to be supported or they will start to sag and end up falling apart and poking through the lining of the mattress. And into to you. Unless it is a short term emergency situation don't do it.I used to sell mattresses. I have seen them made and have a lot of training in why they do what they do and how. And my mother once did what you are talking about and asked me to sleep there for a night. I was totally uncomfortable. And I am not a princess. That all said: I would get two flat double sized sheets and use them. This way they will cover the area but… [cont.]

Where can I find wholesale fabrics/ textiles in Toronto?
Q. I am trying to start my own business making bags and so far I've been buying fabric abricland, but they are really really expensive. I need to buy small quantities of a variety of fabrics at a low price. I will eventually start buying rolls of fabric once my business starts going well. Also is there a difference between textile and fabric?

A. Some years ago I had the pleasure of visiting Toronto for about a week to attend a convention. On my last day there, I walked from my hotel down Queen street to a wonderful wool store called Romney's. On the way I noticed all sorts of wonderful fabric stores. One place sold nothing but zippers. That's where I would go if I were you. You'll find beautiful, unusual fabrics and all the notions you need. All it takes is the time to dig around in all of those little shops.
