Photography (pronounced /fәˈtɒɡrәfi/) (from Greek φωτο and γραφία) is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Light patterns reflected or emitted from objects activate a sensitive chemical or electronic sensor during a timed exposure, usually through a photographic lens in a device known as a camera that also stores the resulting information chemically or electronically. Photography has many uses for business, science, art and pleasure.

Lens and mounting of a large-format camera. A historic camera: the Contax S of 1949 — the first pentaprism SLR. Nikon F of 1959 — the first 35mm film system camera. Late Production Minox B camera with later style "honeycomb" selenium light meter

The word "photography" comes from the Greek φώς (phos) "light" + γραφίς (graphis) "stylus", "paintbrush" or γραφή (graphê) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light." Traditionally, the products of photography have been called negatives and photographs, commonly shortened to photos.

What kind of photography equipment do I need to start out with?
Q. I would like to start a small photography business...nothing major as I am an amateur photographer and am not sure of myself/skills yet. I do think that I take pretty decent photos and have a great passion for photography but don't really know how to begin. What kind of fairly inexpensive camera is a good start? I do have a Sony Digital Camera and a Canon SLR 35mm. Also, what other kind of equipment is imperative when beginning-just to look like you know what your doing? Any help would be greatly appreciated! One more thing before I forget, what is needed to take great photos of food/wine? Is there a special kind of setup that I would need?

A. You may not like this answer but it is intended to be honest and helpful. Don't start any business, not even a small one, until you are sure of what you are doing. Apart from the risk to your reputation through failing to deliver you may be liable to losses. Don't buy more kit until you are a little closer to knowing what you want to photograph - make the most of what you have by learning to use it to it's best. Equipment can cost a lot, especially when more specialised - much food photography for example needs larger format than 35mm or high end digital to get published and lighting is essential and expensive. Look at as many good quality published or exhibited pictures of your subject as you can. Visit exhibitions showing your subject… [cont.]

A. Popular Photographer would be good for you. They are almost 100% digital now, (which to *me* is not good, but that is another story). They have many articles on photo techniques and always some Photoshop tutorials and tips. Also, some features on relatively obscure odds and ends items that can be of help with your photography. For instance, I recently ordered a little credit card size card from England that shows the various angles of the sunrise and sunsets for various times of the year. Magazines are great at making you aware of things such as that. Shutterbug is also very good, but may perhaps not have as many features that would be as useful to you in your situation and with your equipment. steve

A. BFA in photography can help you in any number of careers, a few of which are listed below. While this is by no means a complete list, it should give you an idea of the many opportunities available to you after MCAD. Fine art photographers sell work to individuals, galleries, interior designers, architects, libraries, community centers, churches, banks, hotels, government and elsewhere on a freelance basis or by commission. Fine art photographers enjoy creative freedom not generally allowed to freelance or staff photographers, but they must also be extremely self-motivated. Staff photographers produce images for magazines, advertisements, brochures, catalogs, corporate reports, publishers, architects or other individuals and… [cont.]

  • "the dominant and fascinating and only folk art of the twentieth century" -- Sir John Rotherstein

A photograph is...
