A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. It is a regularly occurring and official count of a particular population. The term is used mostly in connection with national population and door to door censuses' (to be taken every 10 years according to United Nations recommendations), agriculture, and business censuses. The term itself comes from Latin: during the Roman Republic the census was a list which kept track of all adult males fit for military service.

The census can be contrasted with sampling in which information is obtained only from a subset of a population, sometimes as an Intercensal estimate. Census data is commonly used for research, business marketing, and planning as well as a base for sampling surveys. In some countries, census data is used to apportion electoral representation (sometimes controversially so - see e.g. Utah v. Evans).

It is widely recognized that population and housing censuses are vital for the planning of any society. Traditional censuses are, however, becoming more costly. A rule of thumb for census costs in developing countries has been $1 USD per enumerated person. More realistic figures today are around $3 USD. These approximations should be taken with great care since a variable number of activities are included in different countries (e.g. enumerators can either be hired or requested from civil servants). The cost in developed countries is far higher. The cost for the 2000 census in the U.S. was estimated to be $4.5 billion USD, more than $15 per enumerated person. Alternative possibilities for retrieving data are being investigated. Nordic countries Denmark, Finland and Norway have for several years used administrative registers. Partial and sample censuses are used in France and Germany.

Where can I find information about urbanization from the Census Bureau?
Q. I've been looking all over census.gov and can't find anything. What I specifically need is the percentage of the population that lives in urban areas as opposed to rural areas. Can anyone provide a link?

Why does the census only ask if your ethnicity is Latino?
Q. Why does the US census only ask if your ethnicity is Latino or non-Latino? Why doesn't it ask all ethnicity? It goes more in depth for race.

A. I guess because Latinos are more likely to cross the border illegally and they want to keep track. If you are not latino then they don't care. To make matters worst now they want to add the question if your are latino or an imigrant did you come here illigally. or should i say to make their jobs easier, that way they will know how many of those ICE people they need to hire for the new year. P.S. I'm a born american

How reliable is the age on a census?
Q. Need some help investiagting a possible discrepancy. The 1901 Scottish census records my GG Gran Rachel Houston as 34 years old. But this would make her 16 when she gave birth to her son Samuel + he would be illegitimate. She subsequently would have married the father age 18 but her marriage ceritifcate gives her as full age which I'm told means 21. Is this correct for a female in Antrim in 1885? I can't find birth or death records to prove anything so I'm completely stuck. Should I write off the census age as rubbish or is it possible? Thank you everyone for the info it's much appreciated. I Guess it will be a mystery unless I find more documentation, but at least I know now that it is actually possible (which I'd kind of like to… [cont.]

A. Having a child out of wedlock would be almost standard operating procedure as reason to give a false age on a marriage application. And it absolutely raises the question of whether husband is actually father to the child. My suggestion is that you really need to zoom back on any possible death record, and hopefully find a death notice that might include names of siblings. Not familiar with Scottish census or how often taken.. in my experience with persons in US census records, I would say that peoples ages varied almost with every census taken, and you have to compare to arrive at most likely.
