Food is any substance, usually composed of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water, that can be eaten or drunk by an animal, including humans, for nutrition or pleasure. Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role.

Most traditions have a recognizable cuisine, a specific set of cooking traditions, preferences, and practices, the study of which is known as gastronomy. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption.

Many cultures study the dietary analysis of food habits. While humans are omnivores, religion and social constructs such as morality often affect which foods they will consume. Food safety is also a concern with foodborne illness claiming many lives each year. In many languages, food is often used metaphorically or figuratively, as in "food for thought".

A. Ok. this is from my colonial Williamsburg cookbook, that I bought in colonial Williamsburg in 1979, before it was cool to go to colonial williamsburg... Williamsburg Apple Fritters Peel and core six apples and cut them in thin slices. Soak them for two hours in brandy (or lemon juice). Dip them in batter and fry them in a kettle of boiling fat, or you may saute them in butter. Batter Beat two egg yolks and add one fourth cup of rich mild, one fourth cup of cold water, and one tablespoonful of brandy (or lemon juice) and one tablespoonful of melted butter. Sift in one cup of flour, two tablespoons of sugar, and one fourth teaspoon of salt. Mix quickly, then stir in lightly two well-beaten egg whites.

What pet food is good for a one year old cat?
Q. I just got my first cat, and he is about 7 months old now. I know I should switch up his food soon from the kitten formula to something, but I want to know which food is best for him. I know foods like Purina and such is like feeding your cat fast food leftovers. (and in some cases spoiled leftovers lol) So I want something good for him, but a lot of the brands I see like Wellness is $13 a bag. Any suggestions on a happy medium?

A. You do not want a "him" cat on a dry food diet. It should be a minimum of 50% canned food. There are a lot of great articles on cat nutrition at in Dr. Jean Hovfe's article library. Read: "What Cats Should Eat". "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "Selecting a Good Commercial Cat Food", "Urinary Tract Disorders in Cats" etc. Those are all at the end of about fifty articles on cat nutrition, health and behavior. Whatever the cost of feeding your cat a quality food it will pay off for you in fewer veterinary bills in the long run so it is a worthwhile "investment" even if it seems expensive.

How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food?
Q. I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They're more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn't cat food? I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything). It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some… [cont.]

A. They know, especially dogs. If you leave the cat food bowl on the floor the dog will go after it before it goes for the dog food. Cat food is higher quality ingredients than dog food, and dogs know this because after they try cat food they think it tastes better. Cats usually won't eat the dog food if it is on the floor because of the same reasons. They know the cat food tastes better as well. Here is a solution to keep the dog from eating the cat's food. Put the cat food bowl up on the counter top where the dog can't reach it. Only the cat can jump up there, and the cat won't go near the dogs food bowl on the floor.
