The meaning of the word addiction in the english lexicon varies according to context. A positive addiction is a beneficial habit--where the benefits outweigh the costs. A negative addiction is a detrimental habit--where the benefits are not worth the negative financial, physical and mental costs. A neutral addiction is a habit in which it is not clear if the organism (or species) benefits from the activity.

Examples of "negative addictions" are: sexual addiction and compulsion, drug addiction (e.g. alcoholism, nicotine addiction), problem gambling, ergomania, compulsive overeating, shopping addiction, computer addiction, pornography addiction, television addiction, etc.

Examples of "positive addictions" are: exercise, eating healthy and volunteering.

An example of a "neutral addiction" is mowing the lawn.

This has probably been made a bunch of times before, but what the hell, might as well make it again with new members and all that. Have you ever been . addicted. to anything? If so, what was it and how.

What is the name of the medication that doctors give to patients to get rid of drug addictions immediately?
Q. What is the name of the medication that doctors give to patients to get rid of drug addictions immediately? I think I read this somewhere, that there was a patient who was in a coma from cocaine use, and the doctors gave him a medication to get rid of his addictions. The author was asking why doctors don't give it out to all drug addicts. I was wondering what the name of the drug was, because I could possible do a good college paper on this topic. Thanks :)

A. Doctors often give patients Narc-an to end the effects of a drug {IE: stop the high} but this does not eliminate the craving. Most drug rehab programs take several days and rely on supportive medications to ease the symptoms of withdrawal. Another drug that is used for alcohol abuse is Antibuse which makes a patient violently ill if alcohol is ingested while the patient is taking the medication. Unfortunately, there is no "magic pill" to end addiction.

Why is a born sexual orientation equated with choices and addictions like to drugs or food by ignorant people?
Q. How come so many people view homosexuality as an 'addiction or 'act'. Since I've always been gay and would be EVEN if i was a Virgin how is my born orientation an 'act'? and Why is it equated to choices like drug addiction and over eating my so many ignorant people?

A. Sexual deviants are not born that way, they're raised that way. BTW, there's no such thing as " sexual orientation " you have a hetero sexual and then you have homosexual perversion. God bless.

What should be done by people who turn to addictions to end pain ?
Q. Especially if they are prone to do it when highly emotional and sometimes they think they want to use too much and die, but they don't really mean it. I'm asking to know the best way to help someone in that situation... Do not say call an ambulance. This is something that just happens to them sometimes and they get over it. Want to know how to expediate that process and end their craving for substances in the first place.

A. The obvious way would be to experience the pain. There's no unnecessary suffering in that choice. There's no sense in escaping what is going to have an impact on you, one way or another. Addictions are a fool's way to handle pain, I must say. It's infinitely wiser to feel it fully.
