Texas has 25 metropolitan areas (MSAs) defined by the United States Census Bureau. The two largest are ranked among the top 10 United States metropolitan areas.

As of November 2003, there is now an additional classification, that of a "Metropolitan Division." Texas has two metropolitan divisions within the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington MSA. The term metropolitan division is used to refer to a county or group of counties within a metropolitan area that has a population core of at least 2.5 million. While a metropolitan division is a subdivision of a larger metropolitan area, it often functions as a distinct social, economic, and cultural area within the larger region.

The following table lists population figures for those metropolitan areas, in rank of population. Population figures are as of the July 1, 2008 U.S. Census estimates.

Relocating to Texas...Dallas or Houston?
Q. I am planning to relocate within the next two years and Dallas and Houston are on my list of cities for consideration. I am a 35 year old, African-American, professional with a tween daughter (whose father is from Barbados so West Indian culture/community would be great). I am seeking affordable real estate, warmth (the NY winters are driving me insane!), good schools (although private school is an option), great job opportunities and a lot of the amenities that a large metropolitan area has to offer (i.e. I'm a recovering Starbucks addict, a growing Whole Foods shopper, my daughter loves the water although neither of us can swim, I'm learning to ride a sportbike, I love Japanese food and dancing to soca, reggae, R&B/NeoSoul and spoken… [cont.]

A. Houston is definitely your choice! I've lived near Houston all my life and the city is literally a melting pot of culture. And with the way Houston is growing, there are PLENTY of job opportunities here, and more to come! Downtown Houston offers a variety of hangouts (I noticed you liked dancing) with different themes, so I'm sure you can easily find a few you like. As far as finding good cuisine, Houston is by far one of the best cities anywhere for good food. If you like sushi, bar-b-que, Italian, Mexican, or just good ole' burgers and fries, it's the place to be. The location of Houston makes it easily accessible to the Gulf of Mexico if you prefer an ocean setting, and there are plenty of nice resort lakes around Houston that you can… [cont.]

Some geography questions!?
Q. 1. Name the area (much larger than Mexico) with the most inaccurate name of any territory in the world. (Hint: this is easy. The name was clearly thought up by an overzealous travel agent.) 2. There is a mainland country of 11,000 sq. miles (about the size of Maryland) whose nation's capital is located on an island out in the ocean. What is its name? 3. Find another capital separated from the mainland out in the middle of a sea. This country is about 17,000 square miles and has a population of about 6 million. Although the bulk of the country is located on the mainland, its largest city and capital is out on an island. Hint - this is in a sea. 4. Everyone knows about the problems on the island known as Ireland, but there are several… [cont.]

Kinda blows a hole in that 'Conservatives Don't Care' Thing eh?
Q. Midwest-erners are more likely to volunteer their time than are people elsewhere in the United States, according to a government study released Monday. Of the 50 largest metropolitan areas, Las Vegas had the lowest volunteer rate, 14.4 percent. Nationally, 26.7 percent of adults in 2006 said they had volunteered in the previous year. That compares with 28.8 percent in 2005 and 20.4 percent in 1989. The percentage of people age 16 and older in the 50 largest metropolitan areas who volunteered in 2006: 1. Minneapolis-St. Paul, 40.5 2. Salt Lake City, 38.4 3. Austin, Texas, 38.1 4. Omaha, Neb., 37.8 5.
