A clock is an instrument used for indicating and maintaining the time and passage thereof. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". For horologists and other specialists the term clock continues to mean exclusively a device with a striking mechanism for announcing intervals of time acoustically, by ringing a bell, a set of chimes, or a gong. A silent instrument lacking such a mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece. In general usage today, however, a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time which, unlike a , is not worn on the person. Such measurements require devices. Devices operating on several different physical processes have been used over the millennia, culminating in the clocks of today. From Wikipedia under the

Q. watches/clocks are set in the stores to: when Abraham Lincoln was shot or died, true or false? Asked by Gina - Tue Mar 25 13:19:48 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. False - I doubt most people could tell you when Abe Lincoln died. It's an old wives tale, more recently people have been saying that it's when JFK died. The fact is that most clocks are set to 10:10 or 8:20 just because it's a symmetrical arrangement that looks nice. The 10:10 is more common because the hands are pointing "up", like a more positive smile. It also depends on where the clock company's name is on the face of the clock - it looks nice to have the name framed by the hands. Lincoln was shot at 10:15 pm, by the way, but that's just a coincidence. He died at 7:22 am. Answered by honky275 - Tue Mar 25 14:39:11 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Clocks and Watches"
