However it is a holdover from a time when such seeming embellishments had a purpose, crested helms (think the Spanish Conquistadors for an obvious example) were developed in an age of sword combat. The crests were intended to divert a sword blow directly to the top of the head. The original "Pikelhaube" helmet was designed by Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm IV in 1842 and it's use spread to other German states. By 1915, the spikes on the WWI helmets were detachable. The spike would stick up above trench level giving away positions of individuals. Entente troops would often shoot at the spikes in an effort to knock them off to intimidate and annoy the Germans.
