A pattern, from the French patron, is a type of theme of recurring events or objects, sometimes referred to as elements of a set. These elements repeat in a predictable manner. It can be a template or model which can be used to generate things or parts of a thing, especially if the things that are created have enough in common for the underlying pattern to be inferred, in which case the things are said to exhibit the unique pattern. Pattern matching is the act of checking for the presence of the constituents of a pattern, where as the detecting for underlying patterns is referred to as pattern recognition. The question of how a pattern emerges is accomplished through the work of the scientific field of pattern formation. The most basic patterns are based on repetition and periodicity. A single template, or cell, is combined with duplicates without change or modification. For example, simple harmonic oscillators produce repeated patterns of movement. Pattern recognition is more complex when templates are used to generate variants. For example, in English, sentences often follow the "N-VP" (noun - verb phrase) pattern, but some knowledge of the English language is required to detect the pattern. Computer science, ethology, and psychology are fields which study patterns.

Answered by Charlamagne - Tue Sep 22 18:39:07 2009 What is the significance of color patterns on old chimnies? Q. My father lives in an old Victorian style house, and the chimnies have patterns of black and white stripes. We were wondering if this pattern has some unique meaning that would have meant something about the owner. Our thought was that it could even be something political. If anyone has insight, I'd appreciate it! Asked by Ben - Sun Jul 6 23:13:12 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. These were done for aesthetic purposes typically as part of the English Tudor design. The chimneys were highly visible with these structures. In the Victorian era a fad took hold that was to lower the obtrusive profile of the chimneys which consistently had smoke billowing out (as the main source of heating). So simply an aesthetic attribute. (the following is spoke like john clease of Monty Python) I don't know what the hell I am talking about but doesn't it sound like I do!. God! Q. I ordered a dress making kit and the patterns are on a cd rom disc. I have never used patterns before, but I assumed they we be pieces of paper that I could cut around or something. The computer pages have numbers in the lower marging that have the width and length of the fabric, but not where the fabric has a loop for the arm. I don't know how big to make it. Thanks! Asked by Mommy of 4! - Wed Oct 15 13:39:39 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think this kind of pattern you need to print out with your regular pinter. Then you tape all the pieces together. Pain in the "*#@, but it's easier for the seller. Answered by TwistofLemon99 - Wed Oct 15 16:38:53 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Patterns" See also:
