Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Adobe Systems.

The latest version, Illustrator CS4, is the fourteenth generation in the product line. Numerous new features include multiple artboards in a single document, a "blob brush" that is similar to the brush in Adobe Flash, and support for transparency in gradients among other features.

History

Version 1 (Illustrator 88)

Adobe Illustrator was first developed for the Apple Macintosh in 1986 (shipping in January 1987) as a commercialization of Adobe's in-house font development software and PostScript file format. Adobe Illustrator is the companion product of Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is primarily geared toward digital photo manipulation and photorealistic styles of computer illustration, while Illustrator provides results in the typesetting and logo graphic areas of design. Early magazine ads (featured in graphic design trade magazines such as Communication Arts) referred to the product as "the Adobe Illustrator". Illustrator 88 was released in 1988 and introduced many new tools and features.

How can replicate the cracks in old paintings in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop?
Q. I want to give my artwork the old antique look of old paintings. Therefore, I want to replicate the old cracks that appear in old paintings. How can I do this in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop? Thanks

A. Tim D is right in saying that you can use the Craquelure filter in Photoshop. I don't like filters personally, because it doesn't leave a lot of room for customization. Besides filters, there are several options open. The method I would choose to use is to find a high resolution image of a texture with cracks like those that you are seeking. With the image open in photoshop, I would select all (Ctrl+A), cut (Ctrl+C), and paste it onto the image you want the cracks on. It will paste it onto a new layer. In the layer box, I would set the style of the texture layer to "Multiply". It's a very interesting effect and looks most natural to me. After deciding on the opacity of my layer, I would take the eraser brush, 100% softness,… [cont.]

How do you save your final logo in Adobe Illustrator as a vector?
Q. You see i have traced an image in Adobe Illustrator, now i want to save that logo as an image thus allowing me to expand it and decrease the size without losing quality as a vector. I use to know how but my days at school have long gone.

A. just hit save. it must be an illustrator or eps file. If you export it as a jpg or any other "image" file, it will lose the ability to be resized without losing quality.

How do you create a good quality digital graphic in Adobe Illustrator from a poor quality scanned image?
Q. I have a scanned image that I need to improve for use in printing a wedding invitation. I have Adobe Illustrator, but have no idea how to use it. Can someone tell me 1) how to create a good print quality and smooth (currently very pixelated) graphic, 2) how to set the background trasparent, and 3) how to recolor the graphic when done... (or does someone want to do it for me) ?? :)

A. If you are paying, I'll do it. You are going to need to either live-trace/paint it or else hand trace it with the pen tool. You should have a transparent background to begin with when you make a new layer. You just need to turn off the lousy one you are tracing from afterward. Either trace it using new colors or go into Photoshop, which sounds like what you need anyway. You can't change overall color in Illustrator. you would have to recolor each section individually.
