Agnosticism (Greek: α- a-, without + γνώσις gnōsis, knowledge; after Gnosticism) is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims — particularly metaphysical claims regarding theology, afterlife or the existence of deities, spiritual beings, or even ultimate reality — is unknown or, depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently impossible to prove or disprove and hence unknowable. It is not a religious declaration in itself and the terms are not mutually exclusive.

Demographic research services normally list agnostics in the same category as atheists and/or non-religious people, using agnostic in the sense of noncommittal. However, this can be misleading given the existence of agnostic theists, who identify themselves as both agnostics in the original sense and followers of a particular religion.

Many philosophers and thinkers have written about agnosticism, including Thomas Henry Huxley, Albert Einstein, Robert G. Ingersoll, and Bertrand Russell. Religious scholars who wrote about agnosticism are Peter Kreeft, Blaise Pascal and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later elected as Pope Benedict XVI.

Isn't everyone technically AGNOSTIC since nobody can prove or deny the existence of God?
Q. It's a fact that nobody can prove that God does exist, and likewise nobody can prove that God doesn't exist. That is the definition of being Agnostic, therefore isnt everyone technically Agnostic regardless of what they believe? Faith isn't proof.

A. No. Agnosticism, as with any "ism," has to do with what you "believe" to be true, not necessarily with what "is." An agnostic believes that is is impossible to know whether there is a God or not. A theist certainly doesn't believe this. A theist believes that he does in fact know that there is a God, whether he knows this "absolutely" or not. On the other hand, even as an atheist I do not believe that it is impossible to know whether there is a God. I see no compelling evidence for such a being, at least not according to descriptions put forward by any of the major religions, so I hold the default position of atheism. But I am not so arrogant as to think I could not be wrong, and so I am perfectly willing to entertain the notion… [cont.]

what is the difference between an agnostic, an atheist and a believer?
Q. I'd say 1. an agnostic says he doesn't know, 2. an atheist is one who does not know that he does not know. 3. A believer says "interesting" and decides to pursue the questions on and on. what thinkest thou?
