The definition of an artist is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.

What artist do you consider to make authentic country music, and vice versa?
Q. I need to do a project where you talk about an artist that is authentic in a genre, and an artist that is not. Ideas for places to find information would be great too. Any suggestions?

A. Tracy Lawrence is a pretty authentic country singer, in my opinion. George Strait and Brooks& Dunn are examples of country singers who started out being really authentic but who have recently taken a turn towards producing music that fits more into the "modern" genre of country. Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are probably good examples of artists who frequently get classified under the country genre but really aren't. Good luck! =]

How long should a featured artist play at a concert with other artists?
Q. I'm hosting a variety show in November and I have a cello quartet that will be our featured artist. I was thinking of asking them to play fo 20 minutes or a little longer. Is there a standard amount of time a featured artist plays at a show with other acts in it? It's a 2 hour program, no contest, other musical acts along with comedy and poetry readings.

A. There are several items that can adjust the time. How long is the total program? Is the rest of the program a contest? What is your audience? Here are my suggestions. This is based on 90 minutes of program. Open with the Quartet. A single selection 8-10 minutes. Alternate styles of performances by the other acts for 30-35 minutes. Quartet perform another 10 minutes. Remaining acts alternating styles again for 30 minutes. Cello Quartet closing with a single short selection. If your audience is there to see the Quartet you could make their closer longer. If it is a contest. The winners should be announced at the very end. Either way all performers should be brought back on stage as a group, not one at a time.

What do you call an artist who replicates famous paintings?
Q. I've been looking online for the correct term, I'm not sure if there really is one. I'm writing an essay and I need to know what the correct term would be for an artist who replicates famous paintings and sells them. By that I don't mean someone who tries to paint famous paintings and pass them off as the original, simply an artist who creates and sells replicas.

A. You could use the term "copyist" in this context.

Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music and literature. The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics.
