The definition of an artist is wide-ranging and covers a broad spectrum of activities to do with creating art, practicing the arts and/or demonstrating an art. The common usage in both everyday speech and academic discourse is a practitioner in the visual arts only. The term is often used in the entertainment business, especially in a business context, for musicians and other performers (less often for actors). "Artiste" (the French for artist) is a variant used in English only in this context. Use of the term to describe writers, for example, is certainly valid, but less common, and mostly restricted to contexts like criticism.

How much do Artists for big companies make?
Q. Like, concept artists, story artists, all the people that do traditional art for the most part at big companies like Pixar, DreamWorks, and Blizzard. What kinds of artists make the most money, and what majors or other qualifications would you need to acquire in College to eventually achieve a position like this? Thanks.

A. Ultimately I think it takes a combination of connections (to get you the interview) recommendations to get you consideration and an outstanding portfolio that blows the employers away. Conceivably you could start out making a quarter million a year with room to prove yourself at a Disney or Pixar gig. I don't see an individual artist making much more than that. Perhaps an Art Director for a company like that would make a couple million a year, but that job is gold-plated and protected by the national gaurd. (very hard to get) you would no doubt need an MBA or a PHD in the arts for such consideration

How much do the portrait artists at amusement parks get paid?
Q. I've seen what the portrait artists do at amusement parks, and find it very appealing as a job to supplement my income. The only problem for me is the pay. I would like to be paid at least 500 dollars a month in order for me to live happily, but I don't know how much is a reasonable amount to ask for. A detailed answer that is to the point will get best answer.

A. Interesting question, I think the fraud comes with the signature rather than the actual work, I for example have copied Cezanne and sold them and I think that copying old masters etc is a bona fide learning technique but having said that I recall a couple of years ago the winner of the Turner prize, I think, was an oil of a sci-fi scene which won the artist the 10,000 prize plus he sold it for a ridiculous amount like 60,000 or thereabouts. Subsequently it turned out that he had copied it from the cover of a sci-fi paperback and the original artist sued him for plagiarism or something and won his case, I'm not sure of the outcome but the point is that artists get the short end of the stick when it comes to protecting their creations,… [cont.]
