Atheism can be either the rejection of theism, or the position that deities do not exist. In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities.

The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), which was derogatively applied to anyone thought to believe in false gods, no gods, or doctrines that stood in conflict with established religions. With the spread of freethought, skeptical inquiry, and subsequent increase in criticism of religion, application of the term narrowed in scope. The first individuals to self-identify as "atheist" appeared in the 18th century. Today, about 2.3% of the world's population describes itself as atheist, while a further 11.9% is described as nontheist. Between 64% and 65% of Japanese describe themselves as atheists, agnostics, or non-believers, and up to 48% in Russia. The percentage of such persons in European Union member states ranges between 6% (Italy) and 85% (Sweden).

Atheism tends towards skepticism regarding supernatural claims, citing a lack of empirical evidence. Common rationales include the problem of evil, the argument from inconsistent revelations, and the argument from nonbelief. Other arguments for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical.

In Western culture, atheists are frequently assumed to be irreligious or unspiritual. However, religious and spiritual belief systems such as forms of Buddhism that do not advocate belief in gods, have been described as atheistic. Although some atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism, rationalism, and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.

Is it possible to hide behind your atheism or Christianity?
Q. Is it possible to use your atheism or Christianity as a shield. If so how?
Asked by DesiDani(waiting for midnight) - Sat Aug 16 13:31:07 2008 - - 19 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure. For example, a Christian could ignore whatever poor decisions they make in life by saying everything happens for a reason, instead of learning from their errors by reflection.

Why do Christians attack knowledge and honest inquiry and equate these things with Atheism?
Q. A lot of Christian responses to Y! Answers seem to equate going to college, the library, or science class with Atheism. This is kind of retarded. And it doesn't bode well for America's future. So why attack our greatest resource?

Atheists, what is your response to this person that implies atheism is a religion?
Q. "Atheism has plenty of cohesive bonds even if they're not called churches. There are numerous atheist organizations which fulfill the same function within atheism as a church or mosque or synagogue does in a more recognized religion. (Educating followers, encouraging fellowship, performing charity acts, etc.) These organizations are, to my knowledge, tax exempt since they are non-profits." How do you respond to them?

A. That person is totally clueless. All non-profit organizations are tax exempt, that doesn't make them religions. And an "organization" doesn't make a religion either. If that were true, then all chess clubs would be united & considered a religion. That's idiotic.
