In this article, the first usage is generally intended unless otherwise specified.

Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons.

Buildings serve several needs of society - primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat into the inside (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful). Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become part of the design process of many new buildings.

Definitions

To differentiate buildings in the usage of this article from other buildings and other structures that are not intended for continuous human occupancy, the latter are called nonbuilding structures or simply structures.

Structural height in technical usage is the height to the highest architectural detail on building from street-level. Depending on how they are classified, spires and masts may or may not be included in this height. Spires and masts used as antennas are not generally included.

The definition of a low-rise vs. a high-rise building is a matter of debate, but generally three stories or less is considered low-rise.

History

The first shelter on Earth constructed by a relatively close ancestor to humans is believed to be built 500,000 years ago by an early ancestor of humans, Homo erectus.

When a neighbour is building an extension, is it a regulation that they have to be 1mtr from your boundary?
Q. I live in a semi - detached property where mine and the neighbours drive sit alongside each other. They are planning to build an extension covering their driveway, however is this legal to be right up to our boundary. Also if they have a window on this extension that overlooks our property, will this, in future, affect the value of our property if we were to sell. I am thinking that if any future buyers of our property where to consider extension building, would this prevent doing so??

A. I'd say all new developments would have that regulation apart from special circumstances, but in older homes like semi - detached properties it is very common to build to the boundary line. I'd have to believe by the way you have worded your question no plans have been submitted yet. If you have a problem your best bet would be to talk to them in how you'd like to see the project go ahead, after all you can reject any part of it if you wish and then they would have to hire a lawyer to fight your objections, which cost more than changing a few things around to make things good with you. You say windows looking onto your property might lower your properties value, let alone be distasteful to you, tell your neighbour they can have as many… [cont.]

How can I tell if a co-op building is in good financial shape?
Q. I am reviewing a co-op apartment building's financial statements and it gets really confusing. The management office says they report losses or deficits because they operate as a not-for-profit entity. They refinanced their 2 balloon mortgages with high interest (7.7% rate) into a smaller interest (5.8%) fixed-rate mortgage but from $10 mil to $15 mil amounts to capitalize and fund renovations (i.e. window replacement for entire building in 2005 $1.5 mil) and boosted the reserve funds to over $2 million. But this is done at the cost of putting the building and the co-op shareholders into more deficit. Is it smart financing, or irresponsible fiscal management? The building is a luxury apt and looks well maintained with nearly 100%… [cont.]
