A dictionary is a collection of words in a specific language, often listed alphabetically, with definitions, etymologies, phonetics, pronunciations, and other information; or a book of words in one language with their equivalents in another, also known as a lexicon. According to Nielsen 2008 a dictionary may be regarded as a lexicographical product that is characterised by three significant features: (1) it has been prepared for one or more functions; (2) it contains data that have been selected for the purpose of fulfilling those functions; and (3) its lexicographic structures link and establish relationships between the data so that they can meet the needs of users and fulfil the functions of the dictionary.

In many languages, words can appear in many different forms, but only the undeclined or unconjugated form appears as the headword in most dictionaries. Dictionaries are most commonly found in the form of a book, but some newer dictionaries, like StarDict and the New Oxford American Dictionary are dictionary software running on PDAs or computers. There are also many online dictionaries accessible via the Internet.

What is a good dictionary to use while playing scrabble?
Q. Hello! I've began playing scrabble recently (I love it) and I was wondering what a good dictionary to use was. Would a regular dictionary work? Or would a "Scrabble Dictionary" be better? Hope someone can help!

What in the hell is irregardless doing in the dictionary?
Q. I understand language is part of culture and is ever evolving, but that word makes no sense! The prefix 'ir' is negative. Less is without. Does irregardless mean without without regard.( I know I used 'without' twice). I can't even find a proper definition for it except for the fact that people use it thinking it means regardless. This is more of a rant that a questions, but what is your view on the word and it being in the dictionary? ""irregardless is avoided by careful English users" ?? Careful English users?! What kind of nonsense is that. The word does not make any sense, neither does ain't. Ain't is a contraction of WHAT?? These linguists that have the power to put these words in the English, be they Standard English, Olde… [cont.]

A. It's used fairly commonly. My dictionary widget says, it is "probably a blend of irrespective and regardless," and refers to its "illogical negative prefix." It also informs readers that, "irregardless is avoided by careful users of English" and instructs the reader to use regardless instead. I noticed that "ain't" is also in the dictionary even though "it does not form part of standard English and should not be used in formal contexts." ___ What is the Engish language coming to? I had a frightening thought. Then I checked the dictionary. "LOL" is in there. It's defined as "abbreviation: laughing (laugh) out loud." I think it's only a matter of time before "ur" makes it in as an alternate spelling of "your."
