Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan and is located on the eastern side of the main island Honshū. Tokyo's government also administers the twenty-three special wards of Tokyo, each governed as a city, that cover the area that was once the city of Tokyo in the eastern part of the prefecture. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 12 million. The prefecture is the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, the world's most populous metropolitan area with 35 to 39 million people (depending on definition) and the world's largest metropolitan economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008. Tokyo was described by Saskia Sassen as one of the three "command centers" for the world economy, along with London and New York City. This city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC's 2008 inventory and ranked fourth among global cities by Foreign Policy's 2008 Global Cities Index. In 2009 Tokyo was named the world's most expensive city for expatriate employees, according to the Mercer and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys and named the third Most Liveable City and the World’s Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle. Tokyo is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How many layers do I need to wear to brave Tokyo in February? Q. 'm from the tropics and instead of buying a winter jacket for my trip to Tokyo (and never wear it again afterwards) I wonder how many layers of thick clothings do I need to stay warm in Tokyo. I'm thinking of layering up sweatshirts and thick tshirts. Asked by wrecked_nella - Fri Jan 26 04:10:27 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow! Lots, I'd say. I lived in Japan for 2 years, in a town about 30 miles south of Tokyo. We used to get snow two or three times every winter...usually in January and February. Even when we didn't have snow, the humidity level is pretty high there, so the cold was a damp cold--which feels colder than a dry cold. Plus sometimes the winds would kick up pretty good, making for a much colder day than the thermometer would indicate. Can you get a used coat at a thrift shop for cheap, or maybe get one used from eBay cheap? Then you won't have spent a lot of money and you can be comfortable during your visit. Of perhaps you can find someone who has a coat you could borrow for your trip. If you don't like those ideas, maybe you can wait… [cont.] Answered by kim v - Fri Jan 26 04:31:08 2007 What are the problems with overcrowding in Tokyo? Q. For my homework, which is in for Monday. Along with a lot of other stuff, I have to write the problems with overcrowding in Tokyo, and how they can be solved. I have looked everywhere but I can't find any problems with it, all I can find is that how Tokyo works so well even though it it overcrowded. Any help? Asked by Kasi - Fri Nov 6 12:32:04 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your research is accurate - Tokyo is incredibly well-adapted to function with its crowds. Perhaps "problems" could be that housing is mostly limited to small apartments, and that daily public transit commutes are very crowded. However, those are the tradeoffs that people make for living in a ultra-convenient city. Answered by Kleeber - Mon Nov 9 17:42:09 2009 How long does it take to fly from Tokyo to New York and back?
Q. As you see, I'm doing a report on average flight times. (Yea...It's silly). I want to know what's the average amount of hours it takes from Tokyo to New York then New York to Tokyo? I believe the average flight times are 18 hours but I'm not that sure! Asked by beautiful_l0v3 - Thu May 10 22:14:30 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. i think your about right...there will be a small difference between the 2 due to pathing of the flight and jet stream etc. i know that Chicago Ohare to Narita (tokyo) is 16 hours...ive made the flight a couple times. so New york would be about 18-19 depending on the route...coming back ive always landed in Seattle though so not sure there, but it seems shorter (9.5 hours to seattle) Answered by AFwife - Fri May 11 02:52:58 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Tokyo" Japan machinery risky, but China may offer reward
