English is a West Germanic language that developed in England and south-eastern Scotland during the Anglo-Saxon era. As a result of the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the British Empire during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and of the United States since the mid 20th century, it has become the lingua franca in many parts of the world, and the most prominent language in international business and science. It is used extensively as a second language and as an official language in Commonwealth countries and many international organizations. Historically, English originated from several dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to the eastern coast of the island of Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers beginning in the 5th century. English was further influenced by the Old Norse language of Viking invaders. At the time of the Norman conquest, Old English developed into Middle English, borrowing heavily from the Norman (Anglo-French) vocabulary and spelling conventions. The etymology of the word "English" is a derivation from the 12th century Old English englisc or Engle, plural form Angles ("of, relating to, or characteristic of England"). Modern English developed with the Great Vowel Shift that began in 15th-century England, and continues to adopt foreign words from a variety of languages, as well as coining new words. A significant number of English words, especially technical words, have been constructed based on roots from Latin and Greek. From Wikipedia under the

Food, play, short poems (remember Seuss), Chinese things like chopsicks, noodles, mother, dad. Sing, color or draw but do not spend so much time that it will loose their attention. Take breaks for exercise. See below for an interesting website. Answered by Texas Cowboy - Sun Jun 25 22:54:30 2006 How have computers impacted the english language? Q. Hey I have to write a paper for english on how the english language was affected by computers (how it made it grow, new words, etc) and I was wondering if anybody could give me some ideas to write about or direct me to a page with more info. Asked by Nathan H - Sun Feb 8 11:24:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The computer, computer-related technolgy, and applications/uses have impacted the English language in a number of ways. We have gained more words, especially computer-related "jargon, as a result of computer technology such as, ROM, bytes, pixels, etc. We have new words for various components of the computer including keyboard, screen savers, etc. We also have new uses for old words like "mouse." Then, new programs and applications have also given us new words or new uses of words- Spam? Google? Twitter? Facebook? Even something seemingly as traditional as the word "e-mail" is a new word resulting from the computer. Furthermore, we have texting, IMing, etc. as a result of new technolgy and programs. Some other ways the computer… [cont.] Answered by porthuronbilliam - Sun Feb 8 12:55:55 2009 How has the emergence of technology in the last two decades affected our use of the English language?
Q. Does anyone think language in general has worsened or improved as time has gone by? Are standards of written and spoken language in decline and is the purity of the English language getting more distorted through the impact of technology? Perhaps technology has aided the development of English or there may not be any relationship between the growth of technology and language at all! Open floor, I'm in search of all sorts of opinions! Asked by Scaz - Sun Jun 21 17:03:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's worse, some people cannot even spell "the" online without screwing up. Thanks to my trusty companion, Hot Rod (an MX-400 Logitech mouse) I never misspell when I post because of the auto-spellcheck and correction click and I am wise enough to know what word to use. Poor education and texting is in my mind, the evil source of all this illiteracy. The phone companies should boost the memory capacity of their phones for typing in coherent english or parents should lecture their kids that this is not how you should write a book report and take their phones off them for a month or two. On the other hand, New words like "smart phone" "quantum computing" and "fanboy" are entering our language (I do not consider internet gibberish to even… [cont.] Answered by KEVIN S - Sun Jun 21 18:25:26 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "English language" Quotations about the English language or some aspect of it.
