A favourite (British English), or favorite (American English), was the intimate companion of a ruler or other important person. In medieval and Early Modern Europe, among other times and places, the term is used of individuals delegated significant political power by a ruler. It is especially a phenomenon of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when government had become too complex for many hereditary rulers with no great interest or talent for it, and political constitutions were still evolving. The period 1600-1660 saw particular successions of all-powerful minister-favourites in much of Europe, particularly in Spain, England, France and Sweden. The term is also sometimes employed by conservative writers who want to avoid terms such as "royal mistress", or "friend", "companion" or "lover" of either sex. Several favourites had sexual relations with the monarch (or his spouse), but the feelings of the monarch for the favourite covered the full gamut from a simple faith in the favourite's abilities, through various degrees of emotional affection and dependence, to sexual infatuation. The term has an inbuilt element of disapproval, and is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "One who stands unduly high in the favour of a prince", citing Shakespeare:"Like favourites/ Made proud by Princes". What is your favorite way to eat caviar when you're just enjoying it by yourself? If you're one of those who think simple is best and just spoon it onto a cracker, what kind of cracker do you recommend? 2. What is your favorite way to serve caviar when entertaining friends? Asked by Hermey Agonistes - Thu Feb 22 19:27:29 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hand-carved Mother of Pearl spoons, knives, forks and plates. I offer the whole tin on a bed of crushed ice. spooned onto a chilled plate with care taken not to break the grains, which would make it oily. It should be eaten with a fork. I serve caviar with pieces of bread that have been lightly toasted (to preserve softness) and then quickly filmed with butter. A small glass of iced vodka is the ideal companion. It is a matter of personal taste whether you drink champagne with caviar but many think that it is too "sweet" in itself, with too much of its own flavor and that it will distract your palate from the taste of caviar. Many people swallow caviar whole, but to fully appreciate the flavor you should "burst" the eggs with the tip… [cont.] Answered by Cister - Thu Feb 22 21:12:32 2007 My favorite jeans are starting to fray at the knees. How do I stop them from being ruined?
Q. My favorite pair of jeans is growing some frays in the knee, and every time I put them through the wash they get bigger. How do I keep the frays from turning into huge holes and eventually ruining my jeans? Asked by Mark G - Tue Oct 30 11:27:37 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. have someone sew a patch on the other side (inside) of your pant leg. it can be the same color as your jeans if you wish, but this should deter some of the fraying and eventually holes from appearing. also, get a new pair of favorite jeans, they dont last forever :o( Answered by Katerina Beana - Tue Oct 30 11:31:52 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "favorite" |
