In grammar, an intransitive verb does not take an object. In more technical terms, an intransitive verb has only one argument (its subject), and hence has a valency of one. For example, in English, the verbs sleep and die, are intransitive. Some verbs, such as smell are both transitive and intransitive.

Some examples of sentences with intransitive verbs:

Harry will sleep until sunrise. (sleep has no object)
He died on Friday. (die has no object)
You smell. (smell has no object)

Is the verb of the following sentence transitive or intransitive?
Q. The sentence is: Charles gave me the paper. Can someone please tell me why it is either transitive or intransitive?

A. A transitive verb is a verb that requires both a subject and one or more objects, which is the case in your sentence. Someone (Charles = subject) has to *give* something (paper =object), and something (to me=indirect object) has to receive it. Verbs that don't require an object are called intransitive, for example the verb to sleep. Since you cannot "sleep" something, the verb acts intransitively.

Q. what's the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs?

A. A transitive verb has an object. An object is the thing which the verb acts on, and which in English usually come after the verb. For example if I say I like horses, horses is the object. If I say I hit the ball, ball is the object. If say I want a drink, a drink is the object; if I say he asked me a question, me is the object. An intransitive verb does not have an object, like I am smiling, I smile; I laughed; I am drinking; I am smiling, etc.
