From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A locomotive is a railway vehicle that provides the motive power for a train. The word originates from the Latin loco – "from a place", ablative of locus, "place" + Medieval Latin motivus, "causing motion", and is a shortened form of the term locomotive engine, first used in the early 19th century to distinguish between mobile and stationary steam engines. A locomotive has no payload capacity of its own, and its sole purpose is to move the train along the tracks. In contrast, some trains have self-propelled payload-carrying vehicles. These are not normally considered locomotives, and may be referred to as multiple units, motor coaches or railcars. The use of these self-propelled vehicles is increasingly common for passenger trains, but rare for freight (see CargoSprinter). Vehicles which provide motive power to haul an unpowered train, but are not generally considered locomotives because they have payload space or are rarely detached from their trains, are known as power cars. Traditionally, locomotives pull trains from the front. Increasingly common is push-pull operation, where a locomotive pulls the train in one direction and pushes it in the other, and can be controlled from a control cab at the other end of the train. GNU Free Documentation License How is a locomotive able to pull so many train cars? Q. I saw a train pass today and it seemed like forever until the train completely crossed my path. There must have been about 100+ cars that it was connected to. How is it that 1 locomotive is able to pull that much weight without engine failure? Modern locomotives are mostly diesel-electric, meaning the diesel prime mover generates electricity, which supplies traction motors on each axle. This form produces much more torque and low end pulling power than the traditional transmission. Modern locomotives also develop tremendous amounts of horsepower. Tractor-trailers usually develop around 300-500hp, whereas modern road locomotives routinely produce 4,000+hp per locomotive (strap a few together, you've got quite a few ponies working for you). Something else to consider is what you specifically saw. I've pulled 7,000+ feet of train with one locomotive, but we stayed on mostly flat land, and the train was all empties. Other times, I've struggled up moderate grades with only 4,000 [cont.] Answered by Engineer Budgie - Thu Jan 4 22:38:50 2007 What film production studio's logo animation looks like a locomotive? Q. It starts as noise, it's all blurry and then something moves and you realize it's the wheels of a train that starts to move and then the camera goes further back and you can clearly see the locomotive... I am desperate to see it again!! Thanks! Asked by cricu - Fri Nov 7 12:11:47 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The sequence you're referring to is for Dolby Digital, not a studio. Clips for Dolby, THX, or SDDS will be shown in theaters that are set up for those standards. Q. What is the average cost for a new and used railroad locomotive cost? Asked by tower boy - Fri Aug 11 04:02:45 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. A traditional diesel electric locomotive for passenger service will cost about $2M. Electrics seem to be going for more, though I don't know why. Seems to me they should be less. Transformers are cheaper than diesel engines. The Acela, JetTrain, ICE etc. generally are priced by the train set, so how much the locos is unknown. NJT has placed recent orders for electric and diesel pass. locos. You might check their web sited for order details An european high speed locomotive for about 135 mph (built under european standards) may cost around $4 millions. Trains like TGV or ICE are sold as a whole and their price depends largely on the train size, speed and other features (like restaurant or bistro, separate locomotive or underfloor traction… [cont.] Answered by jennifersuem - Fri Aug 11 04:21:14 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "locomotive" Few Signs of Turnabout in Germany
