From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A military is an organization authorized by its nation to use force, usually including use of weapons, in defending its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual or perceived threats. As an adjective the term "military" is also used to refer to any property or aspect of a military. Militaries often function as societies within societies, by having their own military communities, economies, education, medicine and other aspects of a functioning civilian society. The profession of soldiering as part of a military group is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and columns. In the modern era, world wars and countless other major conflicts have changed the employment of the militaries beyond recognition to their ancient participants. Empires have come and gone; states have grown and declined. Enormous social changes have been wrought, and military power continues to dominate international relations. The role of the military today is as central to global societies as it ever was. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Military wives: How long after the wedding did you get pregnant? Q. I just married into the Navy last month, and his friends are joking and betting on when I'll be pregnant. Yikes! We don't want to have kids for a few more years, but it seems to be a popular trend that military wives - or even newlyweds in general - are getting pregnant soon after they get married! Just would like to hear your stories:) Thanks! Asked by symphony74 - Wed Apr 25 01:53:15 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments A. I was in the military when I had my first two children, and now I am a military spouse and have just had my third. DO NOT rush into having children especially if your husband is in the military and could be deployed. Make sure you are OK with his work schedule and with him possibly being gone for long periods of time (at which time you become a single parent). I truly believe that too many women get pregnant too soon and then they become overwhelmed and can not handle what the military has to offer. Yes we have medical and a guaranteed paycheck and free housing if you choose it, but we don't always have a spouse. If you don't have personal experience with the military (ie you are prior military or maybe a parent was) don't rush it!!! Ex: If they put you cleaning and maintaining guns. It would cause extreme depression, and extreme hate for your life. If you are in a bad marriage, you can get a divorce - but the military? Asked by Judy - Thu Nov 12 06:57:41 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I have never heard of cleaning guns causing depression. But being stationed somewhere around the globe, then that would most likely cause a bad marriage if the spouse can't handle it. But once you sign that contract, you are in. The only good way out is to serve your time, and maybe try to stay near home, unlikely but possible, and the only ways out of the military that will get you out the fastest are stupid things that will get you a dis-honorable discharge and then no one will want to hire you. Answered by Sam Fisher - Thu Nov 12 08:17:27 2009 Is it sexist to force men into mandatory military service?
Q. In many countries around the world, men are forced into mandatory military service when they turn 18 while women are exempt and do not have to do anything. Not to mention in America males are made to register for military conscription if they ever bring it back or they lose certain privileges that women get for free. This seem very sexist against men. What do you think? Asked by Connecting - Mon Dec 14 23:46:32 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Sounds unfair to me. I think all 18 year olds should either serve in the military or serve a year in Vista or the Peace Corps and contribute something to society. Some countries do require women to serve in the military, but often they are sexist and won't allow women in combat roles, like the US won't officially allow female soldiers to participate in combat roles.
