In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter who attempts to either make contact with it or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. In the National League and the Japanese Central League, the pitcher also bats. Starting in 1973 with the American League and spreading throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the hitting duties of the pitcher have generally been given over to the position of designated hitter, a cause of some controversy. GNU Free Documentation License How many knuckleball pitchers are there in Major League Baseball? Q. I can only think of one and that is Wakefield. Are there others? I love watching knuckleball pitchers because almost every pitch they throw is unpredictable. It is so fun to watch. It is almost like a science. A very inexact science. And that is what makes it so exciting. I wish there were more knuckleball pitchers. Asked by cannonball - Sun Jul 20 18:56:44 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. R.A. Is there some columnist out there spewing this nonsense? 300+ game winners have NEVER been a common breed... but on average, one or two come along every generation. Here, let's just take a by-decade look at when pitchers finished, the top 52 by wins (I'd have stopped at 50, but three guys are tied at #49, so I took one more to make an even number, which happened to be Marichal with 243). Of them, 23 have 300+, 29 have 243-299 wins. (One presumption: the five pitchers active in 2007 -- Clemens, Maddux, Johnson, Glavine, Mussina -- are counted as "retiring in 2000s decade".) 300+ win pitchers, decade career ended (23): 1870s -- zero 1880s -- zero 1890s -- 5 1900s -- 1 1910s -- 3 1920s -- 1 1930s -- 1 1940s -- 1 1950s --… [cont.] Answered by Chipmaker - Fri Apr 11 02:05:16 2008 How come pitchers have double digit numbers?
