Purpose is the cognitive awareness in cause and effect linking for achieving a goal in a given system, whether human or machine. Its most general sense is the anticipated result which guides decision making in choosing appropriate actions within a range of strategies in the process (a conceptual scheme) based on varying degrees of ambiguity about the knowledge that creates the contextualisation for the action. Purpose serves to change the state of conditions in a given environment, usually to one with a perceived better set of conditions or parameters from the previous state. This change is the motivation that serves the locus of control and goal orientation. In psychology and psychiatry, the experience of lacking a purpose in one's life is known as accidy.

First attested in c.1290, from earl Old French porpos "aim, intention", purpose is related to from porposer "to put forth," from Vulgar Latin corruption of por- "forth" (Latin pro- "forth") and Old French poser "to put, place". Purpose is related to the term pose used from 1374 as to "put in a certain position," or "suggest, propose, suppose, assume," a term use in Late Latin debating (c.300–c.700) from pausare "to halt, rest, pause".

What is the real purpose of the bathroom air fan?
Q. What is the purpose of bathroom air fans? Some say it is to make up for the smell. Some say it is to block hearing of others for little slips on the toilet. Some also say it is for cool air when you are sweaty in there? Does anybody know the real purpose?
Asked by Alex - Mon Jan 14 15:01:24 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, the purpose of a bathroom fan was exactly what it was intended for and unintentionally helps masking. If you look at the top of your house you may find an exhaust chimney going from around the area of your bathroom through the roof. I saw this and realized it was the bathroom fan when I was up there cleaning the gutters. It takes the air in the bathroom and blows it outward. Funny how no one believes it makes the room smell any better. Tells me some people have powerful poos!

What was the actual purpose of Stonehenge and why was it erected?
Q. Many scientists have hypothesized about it's existence, purpose, and construction, but does anyone actually have any solid fact or evidence regarding it's purpose? What's your opinion?
Asked by troutsniffer41 - Tue Jan 10 21:07:58 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I do NOT have solid fact. Some common hypotheses kind of run together when you consider them. A temple or some sort of religious thing...OR A monument to an ancient ruler or priest...OR A time piece or calender of some sort...OR A weather or astronomy device. Given that there have been some cultures that paid a lot of spiritual attention to the seasons, it is possible that Stonehenge could have been all of these. A way to mark or measure the passing of time or the seasons, and that was part of a larger appreciation for/worship of the creator.

What is the purpose of being right handed or left handed?
Q. Seems like life would be easier if we could use both hands with equal ease. Why are we created this way? What purpose do you think being a "lefty" or a "righty" serves? Yeah, I know HOW we become lefty or righty, and how it works with the brain. The question is: what purpose does it serve?
Asked by Brenda - Tue Sep 25 14:31:02 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There was actually a study just completed about handedness (well, pawedness) in cats, and most are lefties. The article I read in Science News pointed out that the prevailing theory is that handedness helps us learn faster. If we consistently use only one side for a task, we learn faster than if we keep switching back and forth. And the cat experiment bore this out, with ambidextrous cats learning more slowly than those with a preference for right or left.
