From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Why are some modes of transportation referred to in the feminine sense? Q. For example, boats are referred to as feminine, and so are cars. Anyone know the history behind this? I call my car Bessie. Of course that's been the name for ALL of my cars. :) All 4 of them. Don't worry - I'm 36, so it's not like I get a new one every year! A lot of it is simply tradition but it varies from one culture to the next, for example in English a ship is referred to in the feminine whilst in the Russian it's referred to in the masculine. Neither is a living entity so these are arbitrary assignments of gender to inanimate objects, perhaps it served to provide those who operated such vehicles with a sense of "friendship" with an non-human entity. Men traditionally associate love with their spouses or children and name things after them, so it's not surprising that when men purchase boats, we name them according to our wives/girlfriends or daughters; it's like getting tatooes.
