How often do you replace a shutoff valve?
Q. I read an article stating that if a shutoff vale is hard to turn, then it is better you replace it to prevent leaking. Is that true? I found two of my shutoff vales are hard to turn. However, they are not leaking. Should I replace them now? How long will them last if I do not replace them? How often should people replace shutoff valves? Thanks.

How will I know when to replace my Braun foil and cutter block?
Q. I purchased a Braun Activator Shaver model 8585 last year, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it got very noisy. It still shaves OK, but makes a ton of noise compared with about a week ago. I am thinking it it too early to replace the foil and cutter block as one website suggests one should replace them every 18 months. It has not been near 18 months yet, and you know they tell you to replace them sooner than needed just to make more money. I went to the Braun website, and it was useless. I am wondering whether I need to replace the foil and cutter block or send it in as it is still under warranty? I hate to send it in as I don't want to be without it for long.

A. I used to work in a drugstore and I sold these items to men regularly. In my experience I noticed in talking with these customers, that how coarse their beards were, and how long they went in between shaves, determined when they changed their elements. I suggest that if you are experiencing any nicks and cuts, or any other abnormality it's time to replace.

How to replace a hole in a plastic bumper?
Q. There is a round hole with a diameter of about two inches in the rear plastic bumper cover on my Mazda. It is located right on the edge where the bumper bends. Some of it is bent inwards and some sticks out over the surface. I've read instructions for repair...but looking for more opinions. There is no way I can spend $500 to replace it. Please share your knowledge. Thank you.

A. How to replace a hole in a plastic bumper? Get a hammer and pop a new hole where the old one was and the hole will be replaced! (remember the Roadrunner moving the coyote's hole in the road?) Okay just kidding. Fiberglass isn't your best choice.Your bumper cover is made of polyurethane, or ABS. Fiberglass wont stick well to that substrate. BONDO makes a two part epoxy system that stays flexible. Holes can be repaired fairly easily. I can't remember the name of the product, but it comes in a small box with green print. I have seen it sold at AutoZone, but usually get it from the paint supply house. Once you repair the hole you will still have to paint it to match, and that can be pricey unless you are willing to just get a "fair" color… [cont.]
