From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. American football, known in the United States and Canada simply as football (Canada also has its own slightly different version, Canadian football), is a competitive team sport known for combining strategy with physical play. The objective of the game is to score points by advancing the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball can be advanced by carrying it (a running play) or by throwing it to a teammate (a passing play). Points can be scored in a variety of ways, including carrying the ball over the opponent's goal line, catching a pass thrown over that goal line, kicking the ball through the goal posts at the opponent's end zone, or tackling an opposing ball carrier within his end zone. The winner is the team with the most points when the time expires. The sport is also played outside the United States. National professional and collegiate leagues exist in United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Mexico, Israel, Spain, Austria, and several Pacific Island nations. The National Football League (NFL), the largest American professional football league in the world, ran a developmental league in Europe from 1991–1992 and then from 1995–2006. American football is closely related to Canadian football, but with significant differences. Both sports originated from rugby football. The major forms of football in the United States are collegiate football and professional Football. There have been numerous major professional football leagues in the U.S., but currently the only one in existence is the NFL. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "American football" What is the Difference between Canadian Football and American Football? Q. I'm Australian and I often watch American football. But I just found out that there is a form of football called Canadian Football. Can someone please explain the difference between Canadian Football and American Football. Thanks. Asked by Andrew S - Thu Jan 15 03:42:16 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The major differences: The Canadian field is longer, wider, and has the goalposts on the goal line rather than the back of the end zone. There are 12 players on each side instead of 11 There are 3 downs instead of 4 There are no "Touchbacks". Kicking a ball out of, or kneeling in the end zone, on a kick, punt or missed Field goal is a Single Point (called a rouge). There's a ton of minor differences too, but they are the big ones. Answered by mekounknown - Thu Jan 15 16:16:27 2009 Who thinks it a bad ideal to play American Football in another country? Q. Roger Goodell wants to expand American Football to other countries to bring in more revenue for the NFL.The funny thing is,is that he has not expanded the market to one of the biggest markets in the US,that is Los Angeles California. This is an American game.If people want to see American Football they can travel here and all NFL stadiums should have at least a 100,000 seats minium. That will bring in more revenue. Asked by steeltown - Thu Oct 25 16:54:59 2007 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. Adding extra seats to NFL stadiums would not come close to equaling the amount of revenue you could generate with even light penetration into the European market. I personally don't lik the idea of overseas games, but it's got much more profit potential than slapping on extra seats. Attendance counts for quite a small piece of the NFL pie. The real money comes from TV contracts, and areas like merchandising are big money makers, too. This isn't about attendance, but about taking that huge next step.
