North Carolina ( /ˌnɔrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/ (help·info)) is a state located on the Atlantic Seaboard in the southeastern United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west and Virginia to the north. North Carolina contains 100 counties and its capital is Raleigh.

North Carolina was one of the original Thirteen Colonies, originally known as Carolina. Joara, a native village near present-day Morganton, was the site in 1567 of Fort San Juan, the first Spanish colonial settlement in the interior of what became the United States. A colony was later established at Roanoke Island, the first attempt by the English to found a settlement in the Americas.

On May 20, 1861, North Carolina was one of the last of the Confederate states to declare secession from the Union, to which it was restored on July 4, 1868. The state was the location of the first successful controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air flight, by the Wright brothers, at Kill Devil Hills, about 6.4 miles from Kitty Hawk in 1903. Today, it is a fast-growing state with an increasingly diverse economy and population. As of July 1, 2008, the population was estimated to be 9,222,414 (a 14.5% increase since April 1, 2000). Recognizing eight Native American tribes, North Carolina has the largest population of Native Americans of any state east of the Mississippi River.

North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to almost 6,700 feet (2,042 m) in the mountains. The coastal plains are strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.

As of 2008 (the most current numbers available), North Carolina is the fourth-fastest growing state in the United States and the fastest growing state east of the Mississippi River.

How do I get individual health insurance quotes for North Carolina?
Q. I am currently living in New York State and am considering moving to North Carolina. How do I get individual health insurance quotes while still living in NYS? All the websites ask you to provide a North Carolina address which I do not have yet. Thank you.

A. You contact a local, independent agent in NC. They'll be able to give you a 'ball park". HOWEVER, if you're under 30 and healthy, it's going to cost about $200 a month. If you have problems, you're likely not going to be insurable, depending on their seriousness. Or it could cost you $500 a month.

What are the most Ethnically diverse cities in North Carolina?
Q. My family (hispanics) are moving from Queens NY to North Carolina. We are not familiar with the cities/areas in NC. Can someone enlighten us on what are the more ethnically diverse areas in North Carolina (no/low crime zone and good school systems). We are used to the faster NY life (movies, dining, shopping, etc) and would like an area similar (not country like). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

A. Probably the most ethnically diverse area in NC is the Triangle area (made up of Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and Chapel Hill). It's a fast-growth region with a good bit to do and that's fairly diverse due to three major universities in the immediate area (NC State, UNC, and Duke) as well as the Research Triangle Park and the companies associated with it. I've seen members of just about every ethnicity in the time I've lived here and, if restaurants are any indication, you can get just about anything from Argentinian to Vietnamese to French to Eastern European to Ethiopian. Charlotte would probably also be a good bet, but having only visited there, it doesn't seem as ethnically diverse as the Triangle is.
