The Caribbean (pronounced /ˌkærɨˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/; Dutch Caraïben (help·info); French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles; Spanish: Caribe) is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia). The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Geopolitically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a subregion of North America and are organised into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies. The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License has the ICC killed the atmosphere and fun of a world cup in the west indies? Q. firstly: the tickets are too expensive for most local and is close to a months wage over there. secondly:the icc has banned people bringing in their own food, drinks, alcohol and musical instruments into the grounds. people who understand cricket know that cricket in the west indies is all about these things-music playing a few drinks and a real carnival and fun atmosphere, and the icc has killed calypso cricket and replaced it with a sterile foreign substitute. no wonder the west indian people won't attend the matches-its not the type of cricket they're used to going to. Asked by FORKY - Fri Mar 30 06:38:27 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. FORKY...you are correct with your observations. I live in the West Indies. Actually, I have volunteered to assist during CWC 2007 in six 'Super 8' matches to be held in Grenada between April 10 - April 20. During my training, I was surprised by the number of restrictions that were put in place that obviously have supressed the 'Carnival' atmosphere that you normally associate with Windies cricket. The price of the tickets prohibits West Indians from attending the matches as you stated...way too expensive! Besides, there are a lot of restrictions on food items you can carry into the stadium. It should be mostly sponsors' products and buying items in the stadium on Match Day costs about three times what you will normally pay. You have… [cont.] Answered by Brewmaster - Fri Mar 30 08:15:55 2007 India vs West Indies Live Streaming Online Video 3rd ODI where can i watch? Q. India vs West Indies Live Online where? Q. Chances are 50-50 (according to me - much and more chances are with West Indies) Asked by Mungalla Rama Krishna - Fri Jun 12 04:02:11 2009 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. You say 50:50, then give much more chance to W Indies; doesn't gel. On paper, India is a far better T20 team, but there are elements than can spoil the party. Everyone is concentrating on Gayle, then Saravan or Bravo can come and hit a match winning score. But on the evidence so far, I would say India has a much better chance than W Indies.
