South America is the southern continent of the Americas, situated entirely in the Western Hemisphere and mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. America was named in 1507 by cartographers Martin Waldseemüller and Matthias Ringmann after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the newly discovered lands were not India, but a New World unknown to Europeans. South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi), or almost 3.5% of the Earth's surface. As of 2005, its population was estimated at more than 371,090,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Where in South America should I take my holiday? Q. I'm planning to visit South America this year for the second time round. I've been already to Brazil & Argentina (loved them!), and I would like to visit another country which is equally as developed as those two, both commercially and with regards to western hotels etc. (ie, NOT Bolivia =). Any suggestions? Asked by guarapple - Tue May 26 21:34:43 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Colombia. Go to Bogota, Cartagena. Cali and Medellin. You will find it as developed as those countries and you will find hotels to your liking (I like the Plaza in Bogota on Calle 100 in Bogota) and GREAT people if you are adventurous.. go to San Andres Answered by Anyone but Obama in 2012! - Thu May 28 23:14:15 2009 What would have happened if South America had been English speaking? Q. If South America had been taken as a British colony and become English speaking and North America had been invaded by the Spanish? Would South America become the North America or would things be totally different? What do you think? Asked by Allen R - Sat Oct 25 14:52:41 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's a couple of small English speaking splodges in South America. But I can't really answer the question to know if we would still have had a USA. The movements for freedom and democracy were an old concept in Britain by the 1770s. Indeed many fought in the English Civil War nearly 150 years earlier chanting "One man one vote!" If the Founding Fathers hadn't come together to expedite the issue of liberty and freedom something would have given politically somewhere as the voices were almost as strong within Europe. Only the US might be now something more like Canada or Australia. Britain itself didn't turn what we could call democratic until 1867. I suspect that if the English had been the ones who dealt with the Incas, the Aztecs… [cont.] Answered by emperor_allectus - Sat Oct 25 15:26:46 2008 How do I get cheap surface freight to South America from Britain?
Q. I need to send some personal possessions - books, clothes, that sort of thing - to a friend's address in South America. But they will weigh a fair bit, and I don't want to spend a fortune. Speed isn't the main issue - but I would like them to arrive in one piece! Does anyone have any bright ideas? Asked by mike_of_sheffield - Mon Mar 26 17:00:44 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A.
