Where to look for landscape plants for south Texas?
Q. I need information of collored foliage plants for South Texas.
Asked by Karazina - Wed Mar 21 13:34:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hello from Houston. Azaleas do well here, Carolina Jasmine blooms beautifully in February, and the Tulip trees are also real show stoppers and don't get too big. Indian Hawthorne is a shrub that can take the horrible summer heat but will be in bloom in March. Sago palms make beautiful accent plants, and bouganvilla is a burst of color alll summer long. Hibiscus' colorful blooms come in all hues. I have a rain tree in my back yard, and it blooms a beautiful fiery orange in the fall. And , of course, you'll see a crepe myrtle just about everywhere. Beautiful and low maintenance. One of the best book investments you can make is to buy Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening. Good luck and have fun !!

What is it like living in South Texas, husbands going to be working there as a Border Patrol Agent?
Q. My husband has a job with the as a border patrol agent and upon his graduation from the academy we'll be moving to south texas, either the Brownville area or around El Paso. What is it like living down there(im from Ohio) I know border towns are nasty so is there nice place to live say 45 mins away? Also Im taking my horses with me, do you think I'll have a hard time finding a place to keep them?
Asked by barrelracer328 - Wed Feb 4 20:40:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No you shouldn't have a problem finding a place to board your horses. You may even find a house to buy or rent with enough property to keep them there. It's very, very hot in both of the towns you named. A large % of the population is Hispanic, so you'll hear people speaking Spanish all the time. You're in for a huge change being from Ohio. It's nothing like the big cities of Texas -- Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, Austin, San Antonio. Good luck.

Q. I live in deep South Texas and have been interested in planting a small tomato garden. I will probably be planting them in mostly shaded areas. What tomato varieties are in my best interest to plant and what conditions do they require?

A. I also live in deep south texas (Weslaco, TX) and grow my own tomatoes. Tomatoes that produce well for me even above 100 degrees are: all cherries and grapes, Mexico, Manalucie, Moskvich, Stupice, Jetsetter, Arkansas Traveler, Burgundy Traveler, Stump of The World, Big Beef, Heidi, Italian Gold and sometimes Nebraska Wedding. No greens, no whites, few yellows/oranges/blacks. Make sure you water them regularly, though! Here's a site with some tips: Good luck!

Custom rim paint in the south Texas area?
Q. I have an orange 05 ninja 636 and I would like to get the rims painted to match the fairings. Is there anyone in the south Texas area that someone can recommend? Thanks, Daniel I wasn't sold on painting it over another means of changing the color, I am just unaware of the others.
Asked by dajackson - Tue Feb 17 21:58:54 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Don't paint the rims. Instead ask around for a powder coater in your area. Any decent bike shop should be able to refer you to one. The sand and salt in the air will play havoc on "painted" rims.

Where can I go hunting wild hogs in south Texas legally in open land (not private land)?
Q. Is it legal to just go to an open field (not private land) and hunt wild hogs, or just shoot your guns for fun??? If it is, what does the law say about it, how far from populated areas do you have to be not to get in trouble? And where in south Texas (close to Houston) is it a good place to go hunting hogs, boars or javalina?
Asked by Leonardo - Thu Oct 8 02:48:15 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Houston is very far from South Texas. There is very little public land in Texas unlike the western states. Around 98% of the land in Texas is privately owned. Your best bet would to check for Wildlife Management Areas near you. These often have hog hunting, but it is often Archery Only. These areas often surround lakes. Try searching the Texas Parks and Wildlife website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us

A. Di Methyl Tryptamine is not only found in the human body (endogenous) but also in many plants and grasses, so 'technically' you can find it in your back yard. However, I doubt that is the answer you are seeking, LOL. I have never tried to find an internet source for DMT, and considering it is more illegal than heroin I'm sure you will not find a 'public' source for DMT on the net, but I do know you can find and order the plants required to make it via a yahoo search, but here's an old document that reveals a few of the different variations involved in making the ceremonial drink known as ayahuasca (the South American decoction from which chemists discovered DMT.) Are there any interesting sites between South Texas and Southern California worth visiting?
Q. I have a long drive at the end of the month, driving from Brownsville Texas to Los Angeles, California. I have driven from Houston to Los Angeles before and gone through the old Route 66 trails and have been to the Blue Whale of Catoosa, Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Bandera Ice Caves in NM, Crater in AZ, Center of the Universe in Felicity. Any other sites or restaurants to stop at?

A. The last time I drove from Houston to the central coast of California, in the eighties, I deviated all the way to the Grand Canyon. But assuming you will eventually pick up Highway 90 West on your trek north from Brownsville, you should consider taking US 285 north and going up through Ft. Stockton to Carlsbad, NM. Take at least a day and tour Carlsbad Caverns. After that, If you've never seen the Grand Canyon, continue north on 285 and after passing through Roswell (you might want to stop and visit aliens) pick up US 40 west at Albuquerque. (I believe 40 and the old 66 are the same in that area.) That will take you through Flagstaff, which is only "spitting distance" from the canyon. Plus it's nice and cool there this time of year. … [cont.]

Can apple tree grow in South Texas?

A. Apples really prefer cooler weather as well as a dormant period. Fruit Gardening in Texas Apples are a popular fruit in much of Texas and, with proper variety selection, can be grown in all areas. Most varieties require cross-pollination, so, for maximum production, plant two varieties. A. A smudge pot (also known as a choofa or orchard heater) is an oil-burning device used to prevent frost on fruit trees. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between trees in an orchard, allowing the heat and smoke from the burning oil to prevent the accumulation of frost on the fruit of the grove.

Q. I live in Galveston Texas and there are these small approx. 4 inch long black Lizards with a single white stripe down there back. they are different than a Green Anole lizard.

A. Hard to say without a picture- your description kinda matches that of a skink (like Scincella lateralis, the common ground skink). However, keep in mind that green anoles (Anolis carolinensis) sometimes have a single (white) stripe down their back, and those anoles can change color (to a very dark brown), so perhaps what you saw was a common green anole in an unusual color configuration. Here's a list of reptiles commonly found in Texas. Good luck on your search!

Can a dogwood tree tolerate the south Texas elements?
Q. If so, when is the best time to plant? Thanks!
Asked by Tracie G - Wed Oct 17 11:28:56 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dogwoods are picky little trees that can be hard to get established when transplanting. They are native to my part of Texas (East) and they are all over the woods, but I have never had any luck getting a bought one to grow in my yard. They say they like acidic soil (same as azaleas), so they should be heavily mulched with pine bark or pine straw (that's acidic). They are understory trees, which means they typically grow under other larger trees to block out some of the hottest sun. The perfect situation is to put them under pine trees--that way they get the acid soil and the shade. If you don't have any larger trees around your planting site, and it gets no shade from the house or other structures, the tree may not tolerate it. … [cont.]
