The word tradition comes from the Latin traditionem, acc. of traditio which means "handing over, passing on", and is used in a number of ways in the English language:

  1. Beliefs or customs taught by one generation to the next, often orally. For example, we can speak of the tradition of sending birth announcements.
  2. A set of customs or practices. For example, we can speak of Christmas traditions.
  3. A broad religious movement made up of religious denominations or church bodies that have a common history, customs, culture, and, to some extent, body of teachings. For example, one can speak of Islam's Sufi tradition or Christianity's Lutheran tradition.

However, on a more basic theoretical level, tradition(s) can be seen as information or composed of information. For that which is brought into the present from the past, in a particular societal context, is information. This is even more fundamental than particular acts or practices even if repeated over a long sequence of time.

What Buddhist traditions do the World Zen Fellowship affiliate with and practice?
Q. Would like to learn more about Buddhist traditions, specifically with the Zen practice and the World Zen Fellowship. What are the main practices and views? I have read a bit about Lineage Zen and mind-to-mind teaching, but any additional insight is appreciated.

A. Ahh, Buddhism. One of the rare breeds of religions that DON'T blow each other up over who's the most peaceful.

Can someone convert to a new religion and continue enjoying traditions associated with their old religion?
Q. For instance, do you believe that a person can convert to Judaism from Christianity but still decorate a Christmas tree every year? I'm curious to know what you think! Some people believe that such traditions are harmless, while others believe that converting while grasping old traditions is hypocritical. P.S. If you are supporting your answer with a source, definitely provide the link--I'd love to read more opinions about this topic! Thanks!

A. I think that they can hang on to some things. A christmas tree is pagan in nature, so therefore most everyone hangs onto it even though its not truly christian. Alot of our old customs come from some sort of pagan root (embalming...started by the polytheistic Egyptians). Now I think if a Jew hung on to praying to Jesus, then that would be hypocritical. Alot of it I think has to do with justifying that its ok. If you can find a way to "make it ok" then it will be ok in your mind. Others may contest it, but really...it's between you and your deity, right?

How was the cold war shaped by WWII and by american domestic traditions and needs?
Q. After World War II the United States became involved in a different type of political struggle -- The Cold War. What exactly was the Cold War? How was it shaped by World War II and by American domestic traditions and needs? What was our Cold War foreign policy? Provide examples of our Cold War military and political engagements in the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s as illustrations of our policy in action.

A. It was called the cold war because the US and the soviet union never actually fought eachother but tensions between the two remained very strong because America is a democracy and the soviet union was communist. In WWII, america and the ussr were allies because they both had a common enemy (hitler) however, both nations were suspicous of the other. Distrust mounted between the two especially when the US and britain did not launch the second front that the soviets asked for until d-day. Some events of the cold war include Cuban Missle Crisis, bay of pigs, korean war, vietnam war, and the second red scare.
