From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, ash and gases to escape from below the surface. The word volcano is derived from the name of Vulcano island off Sicily which in turn, was named after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire. Volcanoes are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging. A mid-oceanic ridge, for example the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, has examples of volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates pulling apart; the Pacific Ring of Fire has examples of volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates coming together. By contrast, volcanoes are usually not created where two tectonic plates slide past one another. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust (called "non-hotspot intraplate volcanism"), such as in the African Rift Valley, the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and the Rio Grande Rift in North America and the European Rhine Graben with its Eifel volcanoes. Volcanoes can be caused by mantle plumes. These so-called hotspots, for example at Hawaii, can occur far from plate boundaries. Hotspot volcanoes are also found elsewhere in the solar system, especially on rocky planets and moons. From Wikipedia under the

Make a lava-spewing volcano as a science project or just for fun. This project is re-usable. Instructions STEP 1: Use a sheet of plywood at least 8 inches wider and longer than your planned volcano to make the base, to prevent the lava from staining surfaces during eruptions. STEP 2: Use salt dough, plaster or papier-mache to form a mountain around an empty 2-liter bottle placed upright at the center of the plywood base. Be sure to leave the lid off. STEP 3: Form the model volcano's open top tightly around the mouth of the bottle. STEP 4: Make ridges and channels beginning at the volcano's top and ending at the base of the volcano for the lava to flow through. STEP 5: Let the volcano dry completely, then paint it with acrylics or spray… [cont.] Answered by HeartsNMinds - Sat Dec 9 12:44:04 2006 what is the best time of the day to view Big Island volcano from an helicopter?
